Credit Scores and More

Whether in qualifying for a lease or loan, nothing beats doing your homework beforehand in assuring you are approved, and approved for the best terms possible. In the US, there are three main credit reporting agencies, Experian, Equifax, and TRW. For business, Dun and Bradstreet is an essential reporting agency as well. These agencies, and their associated credit ranking scores on you and your business are the primary tools used to determine your creditworthiness.

At a glance, here's a scoring table, with links on finding them:

Credit Score Rankings
w/Links to Credit Agencies

  • Excellent: 730 to 850

  • Great: 700 to 729

  • Good: 670 to 699

  • Average: 585 to 669

  • Bad: 300 to 584

The fastest way to improve your credit score is to find and correct any negative reporting done by any of the big three agencies and D&B. After that, credit balancing (amount of credit outstanding to credit available) may be possible, ie. keep existing credit limits high, but don't add more sources, and pay as much debt down as possible. Obviously, you should pay on time, especially with big purchases, and continue to keep tabs on your credit to assure mistakes don't crop up.
